The 60GB PlayStation 3 will cost £425 when it is released in the UK on November 17th.

The announcement came from Ray Maguire, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK. He claimed the price was a "bargain", especially in comparison to standalone Blu-ray players which will retail for £600-£700.

"I don't think it's an expensive machine; I think actually, it's probably a cheap machine," said Maguire, echoing the words of Ken Kutaragi.

Interestingly, no reference was made to 20GB model, which does not feature an HDMI port, memory card reader or Wi-Fi built in. This could confirm rumours that suggested the UK may not even be offered the lower spec model.

The Xbox 360's premium system is currently priced at an RRP of £279, making the PS3 a hefty £146 more expensive. It could be worse if Microsoft goes ahead with a predicted price drop.

Regardless, hopefully this will mean retailers begin taking preorders, although if the is anything to go by, preorders may not begin until Sony can confirm how many units they will ship at launch.

Actually £425 isnt that bad considering it was gonna be brought out at close to £800 ( rumors back in 2004/5 )

Edited Other News - PS3 Online Service FREE!!!!!

Since E3 last week, a number of sites have speculated that the PlayStation 3's "Basic" online service will not include gaming. However, SCEA has now confirmed that online gaming will in fact be free.

The doubt began when Kaz Hirai did not specifically mention online play as a basic, free service. Instead, his slide listed everything but, including friends lists, video chat, ranking and more.

This morning, however, an Sony Computer Entertainment America PR Manager had this to say:

"Please note that online gaming will be free right out of the box."

Online play is one of the features the free (Silver) Xbox Live service does not include, and so free online play on the PS3 may be one of the only features that differentiates Sony's online service from Xbox Live.

FUCK YA!!! Playstations Online service has always kicked X-box Live to the curb and it looks like its gonna do it again :D

It would be best to wait until next year for this system in my opinion.

Great news in my opinion - much better price than I expected it to be, although it is still alot of money. Hopefully the lower spec system will be quite a bit cheaper.

Only place to pre-order in the UK so far is play.com (bundle only):

http://play.com/Games/PlayStation3/STCS1/3-/1032615/Sony_Playstation_3_Console_With_60GB_HDD_3_Games/Product.html

£549.99 with 3 games - decent price with 3 games but wait for more deals to come out before purchasing as there will be better ones.
